The idea of open source software has caused no only more innovation and low cost / free shared software, but also proprietary software has become more and more free as time goes on. The cost of hardware is also dropping at a precipitous rate with manufacturing and supply chain techniques optimizing the model.

Furthermore, with innovation moving faster and faster, companies will see that open source hardware is less of a threat as they realize that whatever the develop will be obsolete in a year anyways.
