I'm sick of people calling us a Narcisstic society. We are far beter than 25, or 50 years ago

Though the point of this columnist's article was about healthcare, his leading opinions about the US becoming a narcisstic society makes my stomach turn. With many old school columnists making fun of twitter and 'why do people feel the need to discuss every little part of their lives' mentality, these are people just wishing for the past and don't get it.

The tools like twitter, facebook, etc haven't changed society's wants. They are not insulating people; in fact its the opposite. We all just want to communicate as much with others as possible in differet ways. These tools enable this.

Our society is more integrated than ever before. Every day, I meet with people from all different backgrounds. My workplace is a mix of Christians, Jewish, Hindus and Muslims an it leads to wonderful discussions. This was not the case 50 hers ago, as people are wishing for.

Lastly, I love that the US culture creates fiercely independent people. From birth, when we are encouraged to plac our children in a separate room (as compared to most other countries where the custom is the same room or even parents' bed), we encourage this. Our strong individualism is what makes us who we are.

Maybe these columnists should play with these tools, rather than just making fun of them. My famiy is more connected than would have happened 50 years ago with all the technology available. I am thankful to live in this time with everything we have available to us and the connections we can make. It's just different than what people are used to seeing if they aren't looking.

From The New York Times:

OP-ED COLUMNIST: The Narcissus Society

It’s time for self-absorbed Americans to recognize one another through universal health care.
