A new plan by 8 states, including Pennsylvania, is considering testing students and sending them to community college after grade 10. This is interesting. It moves the US education system further toward a system of pushing for achievement. This article states another reason is to get a lot of kids going to college out of remedial classes. My only concern in this is that it will push students to test and achieve well technically, but not create well. The American school sytem is flawed in many respects - it is inconsistent, doesn't score well in math and science when compared globally, and keeps high ahieving children down and low achieveing children even lower. But one incredible result continues to flourish: creativity and analytical skills. The US is still the epicenter of the world in creating and innovating in business and our kids develop incredible analytical and self thinking skills. Willthis be enhanced or diminished by this new plan? Time will tell. But with creativity and innovation becoming the only industry in this century, it is important we don't gain technical achievement and the cost of creative achievement. From The New York Times: Plan Would Let Students Start College After 10th Grade Eight states are introducing new courses and a battery of tests for sophomores that will allow students who pass to enroll immediately in community college. http://s.nyt.com/u/BbP
